Are the current production blued models still built with aluminum grip frames & ejector rods? Are the frames the same size as always? I've become confused with all the all steel flat tops & new sized Vaquero's. Also, has anyone shot a .357 Montado? I got to handle one yesterday & it was nice. I may have to let loose of my .38 speed six to fund my next purchase, it's very clean (blue) w/original grips-what should I ask? Thanks for any help-Dave

depends on the blackhawk that you want.
the convertables have aluminum grip frames and the blackhawk .45 standard models have steel.

Really? I thought only the stainless NM Blackhawks had steel grip frames and ERHs, irregardless of caliber.

My relatively new SS Bisley .45 Colt/.45 ACP Convertible has a steel grip frame and ejector rod housing.

My relatively new 50th Anniversary .44 Magnum has a blued steel frame and ejector rod housing.

My relatively new .44 Lipsey Special has a blued steel frame and ejector rod housing.

It would be interesting for me to check out a .44 Special (as an example) with medium frame and aluminum grip frame and ejector rod housing. However, I pretty much prefer steel all 'round even with it's heavier weight for a good field pistol or revolver.

FWIW

The regular blued Blackhawks, no matter what caliber, all have alloy XR3-RED style grip frames on them. The only difference being that they now have the internal lock in them.

The only blued Blackhawks that have steel grip frames on them are the new flattops and they have the steel XR3 grip frame not the XR3-RED.

So far, these are

50th anniversary .44 mag
50th anniversary .357 mag
.44 Spec. flattop

All three are Blackhawks but all three are also flattops.

i guess i dont know about what they did this year. few years when i wrote and asked the about the weight discrepency in there catalog between the convertable 357/9mm 45colt/45 acp being 6oz lighter across the board than the .357 and 45colt blackhawk they replied that it was because the convertables were aluminum grips and the blackhawk (non convertable) were steel grip and ejector.
may have changed with all this new gripframe jazz they have been doing.
all the bisley are steel though i IIRC.

I was actually thinking about putting an aluminum ERH on my .44 Special 5.5", as it seems a little nose heavy compared to my 4 5/8" .45 NM Blackhawk. I like the steel grip frame, though.

To add to the list the .41 mag flattop is steel also.

Not the first time I've heard of people getting the wrong info from Ruger. Since installing the internal locks in some of the grip frames they can't even tell you correctly what grip panels will fit what guns.

I think it's just due to the confusion between the people who man the phones and the actual people that know what's what. Kind of like the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

this was pre-lock and i would tend to believe them at that time since my convertable 4 5/8 had an aluminum housing and grip and my .45 5.5 had steel gripframe and ejector housing

So you're still saying you have a stock .45 cal regular blued Blackhawk that has a steel XR3-RED grip frame on it?

When I say XR3-RED, I'm talking about the style and size of the grip frame. I don't care what letters or numbers it has molded into it.
