I was stationed on a Frigate, Amphib Helo Carrier, Destroyer, Cruiser and lastly another Amphib Helo Carrier. IT was always scary when out trying to find a Submarine (one of ours!) and then seeing a periscope pop up! Always wondered how many times I went in the water. ????

My pop served in the silent service for many years in the 1970s. During a family trip "out west" in 1988 we were on base at San Diego and one of his old boats (USS Barb SSN-596) was at the dock. He learned that it was soon to be decommissioned and was allowed to give his family a tour of the boat. That was a real treat to his (at that time) 13 and 14-year old boys!

He also served on (and was plank owner of) the USS L. Mendel Rivers SSN-686.

I have great respect for all of those who served, but especially those who have gone for months without seeing the sun.

Steven

Mr. Rivers was a good friend of the United States Navy. A lot of us were proud that one of our submarines was named for him.

Sun? What's that?
