Well I loaded up some 44spl for my SBH(44mag) working up to 7.3 unique
with the 240 SWC hard cast, Well with no chono these 7.3s seem to be the cats meow A little high and left but all touching (aproximately 20 yds)
I will try a few at 7.5 with the next range session but 7.3 is awsome,
I may try these at some longer distances gradually and see what happens?
Now do I buy a Lipsey special?
Thank you all
Carl
Load was (Win 44 spl cases, win Lg pistol primers and 7.3 grains of Unique,) revolver 44mag SBH 4-5/8s |

You don't need the buy a Lipsey's any longer, Ruger offers them as a standard item now. _________________ Carl R. Schultz

7.5 gr Unique under a 250 gr. Keith averaged about 975 fps out of my 5.5" 44 Special Blackhawk. Recoil felt about like a standard pressure .45 Colt load. _________________ Ruger NM Blackhawk .45 Auto/Colt Convertible

I could live forever with Unique in my .44's; either Mags or Specials. In a SBH you might want to consider Mag. brass and 9.5-10 grs. It's a very pleasant load that can do 99% of your .44 needs. If it shoots high and you don't want to shoot different bullets? Up the speed. That oughta do it. One of my SBH's loves 9 grs. but it does shoot a click high at 25 yds. It easy to go up .5-1 gr.
Your load seems too light for a .44 Mag gun and I'd expect it to shoot high. I do wish Ruger would add about 1/8" or so to all their big bore front sights. It would cover a wider range of bullet weights and speeds. _________________ If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space...

Unique and da .44 Special... That is soooooo old fashion.
Me, I'm a copper plated bullet guy with Universal or HP-38. C-l-e-a-n.
And for the .44 Magnum I boom with Blue Dot and #9, not too heavy.

Then it is "Viva la Old Fashioned" for me. 250 gr Keith bullets with 7.5 grs of Unique in a .44 Special are "Where it's at!" Long may it be available.

Jimbo, I expect a left dangling brother to use a more progressive powder, but what the hell is #9? We're talking revolver powders here, not porn flick's or barrel cleaners! Was it a Beatle's song? Help me out here; Number 9, Number 9...

Actually Unique is fine with me. What do they say? "if it was good enough for... it's good enough for me". Just as long as I don't have to shoot it. In fact I have never owned any Unique and I don't intend to buy any in the future either.

Yes, Accurate #9. A little faster burning than H110 or WW296. Ball powder, very clean. Originally developed for the Desert Eagle semi-auto. I had one for a while and shot plenty of Nosler 240s ahead of #9.
Sold it off as being more of a novelty than a tool. Just my opinion though.
Personally, I like 250 cast and Unique.

Hi,
That's ok: leaves more for the rest of us!
I've used a lot of Unique, and it looks like I'll continue. I won't try to say it's perfect, but it does keep on doing its job even after 100 yrs of production, and still does it fairly well. Just to give equal time to the competitors, though, I'll be happy to replace it w/ something else that loads all this stuff as well:
12 ga shotshell
20 ga shotshell
9mm pistol, w/ lead, copper plated, or jacketed bullet
.38 Spl pistol, w/ lead, copper plated, or jacketed bullet
.357 Mag pistol, w/ lead, copper plated, or jacketed bullet
.44 Mag pistol, w/ lead, copper plated, or jacketed bullet
.303 British rifle, w/ lead
.30-30 rifle, w/ lead
.30-06 rifle, w/ lead
7.62 x 54R rifle, w/ lead
(That's just what I use it for--I know others among us "extinct creature" types can add dozens more!)
Suggestions? Universal MIGHT come close, but every time I try to find some, they tell me Weshoot2 got there first! He denies it, of course!

Funny, I've been looking for some Universal in local shops for 3-4 months now, based on the recommendation of a friend, and can't find any. Maybe Weshoot2 is getting mine, too.

Some people just have to flaunt their ignorance.
There is a reason why that powder is named Unique. It can be used for very light gallery loads in rifle to to so seriously powerful handgun loads in the magnum class. That 7.5 gr. load in the .44 Spl. is a classic and sometime, try 5.0 gr. of Unique with a110 gr. cast bullet in the 30-30, .308 or 30-06 for a gallery, AKA plinking and small game load. It also workd for loading shotgun shells.
Unique really is "unique".

I'm as nostalgic as the next guy but will readily admit that Unique is a "dirty burner" and there's better propellents available in this day and age that'll give better results...Just my two centavos _________________ "Five beans in the wheel" |

I was trying to think of a good analogy about the way I feel about Unique. The best I can come up with is that using Unique powder for re-loading is like going out to eat at a fancy restaurant and ordering meatloaf and mashed potatoes. Ain't nothing wrong with it, but geee there is so much more to life, why settle for ordinary.
