Hornady FTX ammo does away with that. 160 Grain FTX Muzzle Vel: 2400, Energy: 2046. At 100 YDS Vel: 2151, Energy 1643. At 200 TDS Vel: 1918, Energy 1143.
Not bad numbers for a clunky old 30-30.

I was watching a recent episode of Yukon Men on TV and noticed that one of the cast, while roaming about in the Alaska bush was carrying a Mini-14 as his "protection" weapon. Can't really say why but, I was impressed. :)

IMHO, the best thing you can do is greatly reduce the vibration and clanging by taming down the action. A reduced size gas port and a recoil buffer will do just that. Very cheap to do with awesome results.

Personally, I'd do it in steps. go with the gas bushing and recoil buffer first. Shoot it and try it. Reason? The combination of a .035 bushing and a stronger spring may be too much and cause FTF. Do the first two then shoot it. If still not satisfied add the stronger spring.
Also, personally...
Well, I have to both agree and somewhat disagree with some above posts. Yes, by all means replace the gas bushing ASAP. I first went to a .045 then downsized to a .040. This past week I went down again to a .035. In addition I also installed a 1911 recoil buffer. Now brass practically lands at...
If yours is a newer Mini-30, tapered barrel, you will get far better results by reducing the size of the gas bushing and installing a 1911 recoil buffer.

Give it some time. The more you shoot it the smoother it will get. You could probably help things along with a polishing cloth but I chose to let it "wear in" naturally.

Hard to tell from the photos, but, the problem appears to be with the slide handle separating at the disassembly notch in the receiver. It looks like it was either not assembled properly to begin with or it is slightly bent.
If it were me I'd send it back to Ruger before shooting it again.

Any of them are accurate to 50 yards. But if you want 100+ yards, I totally agree, the 581 series and up are your best bet. But, even those need a little bit of tweaking.
As she sits now, my Mini Rancher will shoot sub MOA at 100 yards all day long.

COSteve is exactly spot on with his mod's recommendations. Personally, I did not install an Acu-strut but I did install a smaller gas bushing (mine is now .040) and 1911 recoil buffer. Made it an whole different beast and VERY accurate.
