Ruger mini 30 for deer hunting ?

Hornady FTX ammo does away with that. 160 Grain FTX Muzzle Vel: 2400, Energy: 2046. At 100 YDS Vel: 2151, Energy 1643. At 200 TDS Vel: 1918, Energy 1143. Not bad numbers for a clunky old 30-30. Bob

    Mini-14 for Alaska carry?

Amazing. I made the OP simply stating I saw a guy carrying a Mini-14 in Alaska and it gets turned into a bear thread. SMH. Bob

    Mini 14 with scope disassembly

Well, it must depend on the shape of the rail or rings because I take mine apart with the scope in place all the time. Bob

    Mini-14 for Alaska carry?

I was watching a recent episode of Yukon Men on TV and noticed that one of the cast, while roaming about in the Alaska bush was carrying a Mini-14 as his "protection" weapon. Can't really say why but, I was impressed. :) Bob

Mini 14 & Ruger Rings Question

IMHO, the best thing you can do is greatly reduce the vibration and clanging by taming down the action. A reduced size gas port and a recoil buffer will do just that. Very cheap to do with awesome results. Bob

Limbsaver recoil pads, do you recommend them?

Short answer - YES! Long answer - HE** YES! I couldn't shoot my 45-70 without it. Bob

My brass catcher works pretty well but usually only when the weather is good and then she expects me to take her out to dinner afterwards. Bob

    Brass Goes Flying

Personally, I'd do it in steps. go with the gas bushing and recoil buffer first. Shoot it and try it. Reason? The combination of a .035 bushing and a stronger spring may be too much and cause FTF. Do the first two then shoot it. If still not satisfied add the stronger spring. Also, personally...

    Brass Goes Flying

Well, I have to both agree and somewhat disagree with some above posts. Yes, by all means replace the gas bushing ASAP. I first went to a .045 then downsized to a .040. This past week I went down again to a .035. In addition I also installed a 1911 recoil buffer. Now brass practically lands at...

    180 Series Mini 14

Can it not be sent back to Ruger to be fitted with a new bolt? Bob

    Accu strut for Mini 30

If yours is a newer Mini-30, tapered barrel, you will get far better results by reducing the size of the gas bushing and installing a 1911 recoil buffer. Bob

    Gunsite scout rifle

Give it some time. The more you shoot it the smoother it will get. You could probably help things along with a polishing cloth but I chose to let it "wear in" naturally. Bob

    Mini 14 bolt issues

Hard to tell from the photos, but, the problem appears to be with the slide handle separating at the disassembly notch in the receiver. It looks like it was either not assembled properly to begin with or it is slightly bent. If it were me I'd send it back to Ruger before shooting it again. Bob

    which series/year mini 14 or 30

Any of them are accurate to 50 yards. But if you want 100+ yards, I totally agree, the 581 series and up are your best bet. But, even those need a little bit of tweaking. As she sits now, my Mini Rancher will shoot sub MOA at 100 yards all day long. Bob

    Ruger Mini 14 Ranch

COSteve is exactly spot on with his mod's recommendations. Personally, I did not install an Acu-strut but I did install a smaller gas bushing (mine is now .040) and 1911 recoil buffer. Made it an whole different beast and VERY accurate. Bob
