If handling heavy recoil was all they were good for, Ruger wouldn't have put Bisley gripframes on some of its .22, .32, and .357 revolvers. It mainly depends on how they feel to individuals, which is pretty subjective.
Not stupid, but a new twist (moon clips) on an old idea. Check out the updated R. F. Sedgly design on the Bowen Classic Arms website:

That sounds like your revolver is outfitted with service grips. Ruger also made larger target grips for the Six series that may fit you better. They can frequently be found in boxes of used grips at gun shows if unavailable on EBay. They can be recognized by a cut out on the bottom for the...
I haven't tried Hogues, but off-the-shelf grips rarely fit stainless Bisleys, which have slightly larger gripframes. An outfit at http://www.woodgrips.com/ used to make them in two sizes and the larger size generally worked, but the current website no longer specifically lists them. You might...
Are you sure Ruger made them in other configurations? I'd always assumed all 1,000 were 6-1/2" stainless and have never seen one in another configuration.
I understand there were two types of boxes for the BASS specials, one with a matching knife. Mine (0038/1000) was made in 1981, but came...
I've found that's true for K-frame Smiths, but I have an N-frame Mountain Gun that stages just like a Colt. Security Sixes seem somewhere in between to me. I like them all and just try to adjust to their preferences.
My favorite is this .45 Colt Bisley Vaquero to which David Clements did some work for me. It's action is like butter and Cary Chapman's ebony grips fit my big hands perfectly. It's just fun to shoot.
My favorite handload has yet to be determined. Currently, I'm using 255 grain SWCs over 6.8...
There's a third category of Brassies too. This 3 screw Blackhawk was shipped with a brass gripframe in 1970, but a former owner apparently traded it out.
About a month ago, I found a brass gripframe at a relatively attractive price at a gunshow. My old shooter now looks like this:
I...
To the extent XR-3 (new and old) and XR-3RED grips are at issue, perhaps that's a tradeoff between aesthetics and comfort, Cary. I'm a fan of your grips, but don't use a pair of flat bottom XR-3 I purchased because I thought they looked better. They do too, but IMO your beveled grips are more...
